Nippur is part of the Tentative list of Iraq in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

Nippur was an ancient Sumerian city. It was a sacred city because of its shrine to the Sumerian god Enlil. It had its heydays in the 3rd and 2nd millenium BCE. What is left now at the site are ruin mounds from several periods. Nearly 30,000 Sumerian and Akkadian documents written on clay tablets have been found here.
